Is the rainy summer season suitable for the construction of steel structure workshops?

Rainy weather in summer is not an ideal period for the construction of steel structure workshops, but it does not mean construction is impossible. As long as proper measures are taken for rain protection, moisture prevention, lightning protection and process control, the project can proceed safely and with guaranteed quality. The overall judgment is: construction is feasible, but strict conditions must be enforced and additional protection costs will be incurred.

In terms of structural characteristics, steel structures feature high strength, fast construction speed and factory prefabrication of components, making them more adaptable to rainy environments than concrete structures. Steel members are already coated with anti-corrosion and fire-retardant materials at the factory. On-site work mainly consists of assembly, welding and bolting, so the impact of direct rain soaking is less significant than that on cast-in-place concrete. However, risks caused by rain, such as high humidity, lightning strikes, water accumulation, slipping and reduced welding quality, remain critical risk points.

The core impacts of rainy-season construction focus on four key processes: welding, high-strength bolting, anti-corrosion and fire-retardant coating, and hoisting safety. High air humidity on rainy days easily causes moisture and oxidation in the weld zone, leading to defects such as porosity and slag inclusion, which directly affect the structural safety. If the faying surfaces of high-strength bolts get wet or contaminated by mud, the friction coefficient will fail to meet requirements, resulting in joint connection failure. Anti-corrosion and fire-retardant coating must not be applied on rainy days, as water contact will cause bubbling, peeling and delamination, leading to severe corrosion in the later stage. Meanwhile, slippery roads, reduced traction of hoisting equipment, lightning risks during thunderstorms and strong winds significantly increase the probability of working-at-height accidents.

Under weather conditions free of thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rain in the short term, hoisting, alignment and temporary fixing of steel structure workshops can be carried out normally. Key processes must be strictly protected from rain: welding must be completed in rainproof sheds, with pre-weld drying and post-weld insulation; faying surfaces must be kept dry and clean before final tightening of high-strength bolts; coating work must be performed on sunny days with humidity below 85%.

For on-site management, a drainage system shall be prepared in advance to ensure no water accumulation or mud on the site. Steel materials, welding consumables and bolts shall be stored in classified stacks, elevated and covered with waterproof cloth. Electromechanical equipment and distribution boxes shall be protected against rain and electric leakage. Working at height and hoisting operations must be stopped immediately during thunderstorms.

From the perspective of construction period and cost, rainy-season construction reduces efficiency and increases protection investment. However, for projects with tight schedules, progress can still be ensured through staggered construction (working immediately after rain and avoiding heavy rain periods) and optimized processes (main structure first, enclosure later; structure first, coating later). If the project schedule is flexible, indoor work such as factory processing, material inspection and detailed design can be prioritized during periods with high humidity, heavy rainfall and concentrated thunderstorms.

In summary, steel structure workshop construction can be carried out during the rainy summer season, but it is not a high-quality construction window. As long as the special rainy-season construction plan is strictly implemented and safety and quality control are strengthened, adverse effects can be minimized. If conditions permit, key processes such as welding, coating and final tightening of bolts should be arranged on sunny days to better ensure the long-term safety and durability of the project.
